I’ve seen this effect done a number of different ways in Photoshop. In this tutorial, we’ll re-create the effect using brushes and layer styles. I like to do it this way because brushes and styles can be saved so you can use them over and over again, plus it’s easy to modify them for numerous configurations. And, it just looks cool!

The promotional poster for The Avengers movie is a great example of how different layer styles, in combination, can produce extremely multidimensional effects. Of course, we can’t be sure they created the metallic, dark-chrome logo using Photoshop, but it’s how we’d do it—that’s just how we roll.

In this “Down & Dirty” we’re creating a multi-photo layout that you could use for anything from the front of a business card to a website slash page to the opening for a slide show or presentation. Setting it up the first time is easy—it just takes a couple of minutes, but the nice thing is that once you’ve created it, you can save it as a template. (If you’re comfortable with using smart objects, you could import each image as a smart object, rather than just opening them normally, which will make switching out the images in the future even easier.)
