Give your RF Lens New Macro Capabilities
Review by Fernando Santos
Do you use a Canon RF mount camera? Thanks to JJC, we now have extension tubes available for the RF mount. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about teleconverters or extenders….Keep reading.
The JJC Extension Tube Set includes two tubes, one 11mm and the other 16mm long. You can also combine them into a 27mm tube. The extension tubes are hollow, with no optics inside. There is some light loss, but you don’t have to worry about it, because your camera will adjust when measuring the appropriate exposure. The good news is that the JJC tubes do provide full communication between the lens and the camera body, which means you’ll have automatic exposure and autofocus available.
These extension tubes allow you to focus much closer than indicated on the lens specifications that, because you can get closer to your subject, will give you a larger image for that same focal length. The downside is that you won’t be able to focus to infinity; but that’s not important when you’re doing macro work, right?
Removing the extension tubes will give you the lens back just as it always was, so your lens and camera will not be permanently changed.
Considering the simplicity of the product, you may think $79.95 is overpriced, but it’s a small price to pay to open up new possibilities to your existing lens (plus, you’ll probably be able to find it for less than that online). The package includes a small instruction leaflet with print that, for my age, is too small to read; but that’s not a problem, because the tubes require only a flat learning curve. You also get a nice neoprene pouch to transport and protect your new extension tube set.
I found the JJC Automatic Extension Tube for Canon RF Mount to work reliably.
