Member Monday Featuring Alan Brandon

If you enjoy wildlife photography, this Member Monday is for you! Take a look at this remarkable reflective image of a wild heron captured by KelbyOne member Alan Brandon.

About the Photo

I made this photo on Assateague Island, on the coast of Virginia, which is an amazing national park known for the wild ponies that live there. But many species of birds migrate through the area too. I was thinking about “symmetry” for a weekly photo project I participate in when I saw this great blue heron with his awesome reflection. He was actually moving, but so slowly there was hardly a ripple in the water.

Gear and Software

I shot this with my trusty Canon 7D Mk II with a 100-400 zoom at 400mm. ISO 250, 1/500 at f/5.6. I processed it in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Photography Preferences

I like to shoot motorcycles, travel, and nature. Lately I have done some night sky photography too. And I’m trying to up my portrait game.

Photography Inspiration

I think some of the classes by Moose Peterson and Rick Sammon have really helped me develop my wildlife photography skills. And I always try to channel my inner Karen Hutton to keep my creative eyes wide open. But I have also internalized a lot of great techniques that I pick up from courses by Scott, Lindsey Adler, Kaylee Greer – There are too many great instructors to pick a favorite!

Favorite KelbyOne Classes

The Days and Week with Jay Maisel are some of my favorite classes. His insight and experiences are amazing.
