Hand-Painted Canvas Backdrops for Photographers

Review by Gilmar Smith

While I was searching for the perfect, hand-painted canvas backdrop recently, I stumbled upon Franklin Backdrops over at Instagram and I instantly fell in love with the pictures of their products.

I’ve been dreaming about getting a hand-painted backdrop for a while, but the companies I looked at priced them so high that I couldn’t even afford to rent them. So I went ahead and stalked the Franklin Backdrops Instagram page for a while, watched their behind-the-scenes videos while the canvases were being painted, and followed every tagged post to find out what other photographers were saying about these backdrops. All the comments were very positive; so I’m now the proud owner of a Franklin Backdrop, and I cannot say enough great things about it.

The Backdrop comes in a roll ready to be hung, and in the packaging, you’ll find a very useful care-and-maintenance guideline. They come in the following sizes:

  • Small: 5×7′ ($400)
  • Medium: 6×9′ ($465)
  • Large: 7×10′ ($600)
  • X-Large: 8×12′ ($845)

The company usually has different sizes and colors in stock, ready to ship; but if you’re looking for a particular color and texture, or a larger size (say 12×20′), call Jay Franklin (owner), who will be more than happy to help with your request.

I picked a 5×7′ distressed gray backdrop with warmer tones toward the center and a very subtle texture. I was in awe when I saw it for the first time! I paired it with a box of laminated wooden floors I bought, and set up a home studio in my living room. When I took a few portraits to see how it photographed, I was delighted.
