MEMBER MONDAY FEATURING JOHN RAE
This week, we’re discussing commercial and product photography with John Rae.
ABOUT THE PHOTOS
These are all commercial food images: the pita bread was shot for a book (not yet published) about different types of bread, the pasta is a high protein pasta for a body building food supplier, and the coconut oil is a “lifestyle” image requested by the client after I shot some standard pack shots of the jar.
GEAR AND SOFTWARE
I am one of that rare breed, a Pentax shooter! These were all shot with my trusty K3, though recently I have graduated to the medium format 645z. Basic processing is in LR and retouching in PS.
PHOTOGRAPHY PREFERENCES
My background is catering and hospitality, so food is a big part of my career history and recently I have been photographing more and more food items (it helps that I live with a chef!). Though my first love is people: portraits and fashion.
PHOTOGRAPHY INSPIRATION
I learned about food photography by watching KelbyOne classes by Joe Glyda, Steve Hansen, and Nicole Young.
FAVORITE KELBYONE CLASS
My favourite has to be anything by Frank Doorhof, what a cool guy!
Take a look at more of John Rae’s commercial photography on his website—he’s got quite the portfolio.
Shout out to all you Pentaxians out there 🙂
