As photographers, our love affair with symmetry goes back to the very first photographs. Even then, before we knew or understood any of the rules for photographic composition, we understood balance within a photo. Look back to some of the very first group portraits ever taken and you’ll see people of various heights arranged in a distinct way. All the tall people aren’t stacked on one side of the photo with all the shorter people lined up on the other side. The taller folks are placed in the middle or the outer corners, creating a type of symmetry and balance that’s universally appreciated. Layer Styles: A Tiny Universe of Endless Possibilities

Their popularity stems from their versatility and the wide range of design and photographic effects that they offer. I remember life before layer styles, and if you know what went into just getting a simple bevel effect back then, you definitely appreciate the power and convenience of them. In fact, my top three favorite features in Photoshop are brushes, 3D, and layer styles.
